Entry-level job. Requires five years' experience. Salary competitive. You've been competitive your whole life and you still can't afford the rent. The big box costs more per gram than two small boxes. The sign on the big box says "value". You stand in the supermarket aisle with the calculator on your phone, and the cereal wins. At the airport you can't take a small bottle of water through security. On the other side you can buy a bigger one for £4.20, and a glass bottle of whisky the size of your arm. At ten you walked to school alone, through traffic, with a key on a string round your neck. At thirty you need two forms of ID and a utility bill to borrow a library book. **Why it caught on:** Pokémon began as a pair of Game Boy games in Japan in 1996, and a whole generation grew up accepting that a ten-year-old leaves home with a pocketful of monsters. Then they grew up, noticed, and found the adult world's rules weren't much better.
