You've lived in this town for twelve years. A tourist asks you for the station. You point confidently in one direction, then change your mind halfway through the gesture. Someone at your parents' house "reorganised" the kitchen. You open seven cupboards looking for a mug. Cupboard seven contains the mugs and, inexplicably, the batteries. You open a spreadsheet you built last spring. There are 14 tabs, one called "FINAL final 2", and a formula you can't read. You were apparently a genius once, briefly. In the car park you press the key fob and listen. Somewhere, far off, a car beeps. Could be yours. You walk towards it with the confidence of a man who has no idea. **How it came about:** in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Gandalf stops at a three-way fork in the dark of Moria and says "I have no memory of this place." The still of his lost face became the reaction for coming back to anything you were supposed to know. **Why it caught on:** the wisest guide on the quest admitting he's lost is the exact face of anyone opening their own code, notes or kitchen cupboard after six months.
