How it came about: at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Fernando Alonso's McLaren-Honda was passed down the straight like it was parked, and he shouted "GP2 engine! GP2! Argh!" over the radio - at Honda's home race, in front of Honda's bosses. GP2 was the junior series below Formula 1. The broadcast aired it, and within hours fans were stamping "GP2 engine" on anything slow.
Why it caught on: McLaren-Honda was sold as the return of the Senna-era dream team and turned out to be the slowest engine on the grid, and Alonso - a two-time champion - said what everyone watching was thinking, out loud, at the worst possible place to say it.
