How it came about: at the Pelennor Fields in The Return of the King (2003), the Witch-king, who "no man can kill", is killed by Éowyn, who takes off her helmet and says "I am no man!" Fans started using the scene for anyone getting around a rule by its wording.
Why it caught on: it's fantasy's best-known loophole, and Miranda Otto's delivery makes a technicality feel heroic - which is how everyone feels when they find one.
