Your partner says "we'll just eat when we get there". There is a four-hour drive between you and "there". You have packed nine snacks in secret, and you will be eating them in front of everyone.
The meeting invite says 11:30 to 13:30. Nobody has mentioned lunch. You spend the first hour quietly working out whether a granola bar can be opened in silence.
At the hotel, breakfast ends at 10. You come down at 9:58 and load a plate as if the world ends at 10:01, then fold a croissant into a napkin "for later". Later is 10:15.
How it came about: on the road from Bree in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Aragorn stops the hobbits and Pippin is outraged: "What about second breakfast?" Merry then lists elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper, and fans quoted the list as a perfectly reasonable timetable.
Why it caught on: it made every snacker on earth feel seen, and it's the line for anyone whose plans have been cut short.
