A man has been sitting in the corner of the café since you arrived. Same coffee, no laptop, no phone. Just watching. He is either a novelist or an undercover inspector, and you've started eating your scone more politely just in case.

Day one at the new job. Someone in a hoodie at the back of the meeting says nothing for an hour, then fixes the thing that's been broken for three weeks. Nobody knows his name. Everyone calls him "the guy from the third floor".

At the wedding there's a man at table 12 nobody can place. The bride's side thinks he's the groom's. The groom's side thinks he's the bride's. He's had four slices of cake.

In the group chat, a number with no name has been a member for two years. It has never posted. It reads every message within a minute.

How it came about: in the Prancing Pony in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Frodo asks the innkeeper who the hooded stranger in the corner is, and learns he's a Ranger called Strider. Fans used the frame for the quiet, unexplained person in every room.

Why it caught on: every party, office and family gathering has one, and nobody ever finds out who he is.
